Delta Air Lines is permanently canceling three domestic routes from its John F. Kennedy International Airport hub. The carrier plans to shift that regional service to LaGuardia instead, a move tied to slot constraints at New York’s capacity-limited airports.
The three routes—to Memphis International Airport (MEM), Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)—will end nonstop JFK service effective late 2026, with operations moving to LaGuardia. Delta launched all three routes in September 2025 as part of its New York expansion effort. They’ve been temporarily suspended since June 7, and were scheduled to return September 8—a return that will no longer happen.
In exchange, Delta is restoring its Raleigh-Durham (RDU) to Fort Myers (RSW) route beginning November 21, 2026. One daily departure will operate the 668-mile pairing using a Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet.
Slot Strategy and Infrastructure Investment
The decision reflects Delta’s push to preserve its premium slot positions for higher-yielding services at New York’s slot-constrained airports. Both JFK and LaGuardia operate under the FAA’s High Density Rule, which caps operations at 71 slot pairs per hour. Because the FAA’s Limited Waiver of the Slot Usage Requirement extends through Summer 2026, Delta can reduce frequency without penalty—something the carrier is taking advantage of now.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a press release: “Delta is investing more in airport infrastructure today than at any other time in our history. With transformational projects now underway at both JFK and LaGuardia, we’re creating the airports our New York customers have long deserved.”
LaGuardia is getting major work. Delta and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are jointly investing $4 billion to consolidate terminals C and D into a state-of-the-art 1.3 million-square-foot facility featuring 37 gates across four concourses. Meanwhile, Delta is expanding Terminal 4 at JFK by 16 gates to consolidate all domestic and international operations there.
Load Factor Reality
These three routes struggled to attract passengers. According to Cirium data, Houston and Memphis carried load factors of 81.9% and 81.3% respectively—solid numbers by most measures. St. Louis, however, significantly underperformed at 67.1%, well below Delta’s system average and suggesting weak demand on a route the carrier previously operated between 2009 and 2012.
All three markets fall within LaGuardia’s 1,500-mile perimeter rule established by the Port Authority in 1984, so no regulatory barriers prevent their relocation. Come Q3 2026, Delta will operate 21,597 domestic departures from LaGuardia versus 14,740 from JFK, making LGA Delta’s fifth-largest base.
RDU–RSW and Competitive Landscape
The Fort Myers restoration marks Delta’s tenth route to RSW. An Austin connection also launches November 21. The 668-mile route, suspended in January 2020, taps into winter leisure demand in Florida’s fastest-growing market. RSW handled 11.1 million passengers in 2025 and set a monthly record of 1.52 million travelers in March 2026. Delta led all carriers at the airport that month with 289,910 passengers.
Breeze Airways currently operates the only other nonstop RDU–RSW service, setting up direct competition between the two carriers on this regional leisure route. Fort Myers is also welcoming new service from Avelo Airlines to Charlotte and Dallas in November.
The JFK cancellations mean JetBlue becomes the sole carrier offering direct JFK-to-St. Louis and JFK-to-Houston service. Memphis loses direct JFK connectivity entirely.
Broader Strategic Implications
Delta has quietly exited several other JFK international routes including Brussels, Geneva, and London-Gatwick. At the same time, the carrier is adding summer Mediterranean service to Sardinia and Malta. The pattern suggests Delta’s strategy to reserve premium JFK slots for higher-margin international and transcontinental service instead.
Delta is also launching seasonal weekend service from LaGuardia to Melbourne, Florida (MLB) beginning December 19, 2026, further expanding its winter Florida presence.
