Malaysia Airlines has launched nonstop flights from Kuala Lumpur to Shenzhen and Changsha, China. The two new routes push the carrier’s Greater China network to nine destinations and make China its second-largest international market by gateway count.
Shenzhen service began on 1 July 2026. Flight MH522/MH523 departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) at 9:05 p.m. local time on its inaugural run. Changsha launched a week later—8 July 2026—with flights MH520/MH521. Both routes operate daily on Boeing 737-8 aircraft, each delivering 2,436 weekly seats based on comparable Malaysia Airlines 737-8 deployments.
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) formally announced the expansion on 9 July 2026. Bryan Foong, Chief Executive Officer of Airline Business at MAG, said: “The launch of our services to Shenzhen and Changsha marks a proud milestone in our continuous efforts to expand our network across China. By connecting Kuala Lumpur to these high-growth regional hubs, we are offering travellers greater convenience and flexibility while supporting stronger business, tourism and people-to-people ties between our two countries.”
The airline now connects Kuala Lumpur to nine Greater China destinations: Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Chengdu Tianfu, Hong Kong, Taipei, Shenzhen Bao’an, and Changsha Huanghua. Combined, these routes operate up to 74 weekly frequencies—a jump from 60 before Shenzhen and Changsha came online. MAG Group Chief Executive Officer Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar pointed to the market’s robust health, citing an 85 per cent average load factor on China routes during the first quarter of 2026.
This expansion follows the successful launch of Chengdu Tianfu service in January 2026. Malaysia Airlines is deliberately targeting secondary Chinese markets—where seat competition is less intense than on major trunk routes. By contrast, Singapore Airlines operates 22 Chinese cities with substantially higher frequencies on its flagship routes, including Shanghai at 35 weekly and Beijing at 28 weekly.
To drive bookings, Malaysia Airlines rolled out promotional fares. Passengers in Malaysia can now book return tickets starting at MYR 1,088 (roughly US$230). UK-based travellers found introductory Economy Class returns from London Heathrow from GBP 1,009++ per person. These promotional prices run through 8 August 2026.
The timing aligns with Malaysia’s visa-free entry agreement with China, which took effect in 2024 and has significantly reshaped travel between the countries. Tourism numbers reflect the surge: Malaysia received over 10.6 million visitors in the first quarter of 2026 alone—the highest recorded for that period.
Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airline Business at MAG, added: “With these new routes, we now serve nine gateways across Greater China.”
The China expansion sits within a wider modernization initiative. MAG is targeting a fleet of 32 Boeing 737-8s, 12 Boeing 737-10s equipped with lie-flat business class, 40 A330 Neos, and up to 16 long-range widebodies by 2035. Earlier in April 2026, Malaysia Airlines also reintroduced Fukuoka, Japan—with 5x-weekly service launching 2 September 2026—and increased Kuala Lumpur–London Heathrow flights from 14x to 16x weekly.
The carrier finished FY2025 with group revenue of RM14.5 billion (up 6 per cent year-on-year). Available seat kilometres climbed 16 per cent, while total passengers carried reached 18.6 million.
