Are any F-104 Starfighters currently for sale?
The market is too thin and changeable for a permanent article to promise a live listing. Aircraft may appear through specialist warbird brokers, auctions, museums, private collections and direct owner networks. An old listing can remain indexed long after the aircraft was sold, withdrawn or moved.
Ask the seller for the current date, aircraft serial number, registration, location, ownership documents, configuration, logbook summary and exactly what is included. Photos alone cannot establish availability or airworthiness.
Why the F-104 remains collectible
Lockheed developed the F-104 in the early 1950s under designer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson and the Skunk Works team. The prototype first flew in 1954. The design paired a slender fuselage and very small, thin wings with a powerful General Electric J79 turbojet, producing the profile that led to the “missile with a man in it” description.
Multiple variants served with the U.S. Air Force and numerous international operators. Production and licensing arrangements created important differences among airframes, engines, avionics, seats, structures and records. A specification copied from one model should not be applied automatically to another.
Can a civilian legally own an F-104?
Private ownership can be possible in the United States when the aircraft and transaction satisfy applicable property, registration, demilitarization, export/import and aviation requirements. That statement does not mean every F-104 can be registered or flown.
FAA registration establishes nationality and ownership-related status; it is not an approval for flight. An aircraft also needs the appropriate airworthiness certificate and must comply with its operating limitations. Under 14 CFR 21.191(d), an experimental certificate may be issued for exhibition purposes that include exhibiting the aircraft’s flight capabilities, performance or unusual characteristics at airshows and similar events, plus related training and maintenance activity.

- Confirm the seller owns every engine, spare and piece of ground equipment included.
- Review government-surplus and demilitarization documentation.
A painted tail number is not proof of current registration. The FAA’s interactive inquiry is a useful starting point, but the underlying record and transaction documents require review.
Airworthiness and operating limitations
A flyable F-104 should have more than a certificate displayed in the cockpit. Review the current special airworthiness certificate, operating limitations, program letters or other required submissions, inspection status, maintenance entries, approved data and any geographic or operational restrictions.
Experimental/exhibition status does not mean “anything goes.” Limitations can govern the purpose of operation, flight area, events, proficiency, passenger carriage, maintenance and notification. A buyer planning a different home base or operating mission must determine whether existing documents remain suitable.
Technical inspection before purchase
Airframe and structure
Engage inspectors who understand the exact F-104 variant. Examine corrosion, fatigue-critical areas, previous repairs, control systems, landing gear, brakes, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, fuel cells, canopy and pressure systems. Missing access panels or apparently minor fittings can become major sourcing problems.
Engine and accessories
The J79 family includes variant-specific hardware and limits. Verify engine identity, records, preservation, cycles, time, life-limited status, inspections and accessories. An engine that runs is not necessarily eligible or safe for flight. Include test equipment and specialist shop access in the evaluation.
Ejection seat and pyrotechnics
Ejection systems require specialized handling and documentation. Cartridges, rockets and other energetic devices create storage, transport, expiration, maintenance and legal concerns. Some aircraft have inert or modified seats; others may have operational systems. The configuration must be identified by qualified personnel before anyone works around it.
Logs, manuals and approved data
Incomplete military records are common in surplus-aircraft transactions. Determine whether the available technical orders, component cards, inspection histories and modification records support the intended operation. A beautiful restoration without traceable records may remain a display aircraft.
Support equipment and infrastructure
The purchase should account for more than the airframe. A viable operating package may need:
- special tools, jacks, stands and tow equipment;
- ground power, starting and servicing equipment;
- oxygen, nitrogen, hydraulic and fuel servicing capability;
- engine and component spares;
- qualified mechanics and inspection personnel;
- a suitable hangar, runway and airport operating agreement; and
- noise, fire-response and environmental planning.
Transporting a non-flying F-104 can itself be a major project involving disassembly, lifting, permits, cradles and reassembly.
Pilot qualification and insurance
Operating a supersonic-era military jet requires training, recent experience and authorization appropriate to the aircraft and certificate. The aircraft’s operating limitations and FAA requirements govern; owning another turbine aircraft does not automatically qualify a pilot for the F-104.
Contact insurers before purchase. Underwriters may require named pilots, specific training, recurrent checks, maintenance arrangements, liability limits and approved uses. An aircraft can be legally ownable yet impractical to insure for the intended operation.
What does an F-104 cost?
There is no reliable universal price range. Value changes radically with variant, provenance, completeness, cosmetic condition, engine status, records, spares, operating documents and whether the aircraft is static or flyable.
Build a total-ownership model rather than focusing on acquisition price:
- prepurchase inspection and records research;
- transport or ferry preparation;
- restoration and initial discrepancies;
- hangar and airport costs;
- insurance and training;
- fuel, oil, tires, brakes and consumables;
- engine, ejection-system and component reserves;
- specialists, tooling and spares; and
- future preservation or disposal.
A low-priced incomplete aircraft can cost more than a documented example once missing parts and transport are included.

- Is the aircraft offered as static, ground-running or flyable?
- What airworthiness certificate and operating limitations apply?
- Which logs, military records and component cards are present?
- What is the engine identity, preservation and life-status documentation?

- Which spares, tools and ground equipment transfer with the sale?
- Are any parts borrowed, leased or excluded?
- What damage, corrosion, repair or storage history is known?
- Can an independent F-104 specialist inspect the aircraft?

An F-104 for-sale advertisement is the beginning of due diligence, not proof of a usable aircraft. Decide first whether the goal is display, restoration, ground demonstration or flight. Then verify ownership, documents, condition, support and operating authority with specialists who understand the exact variant.
