San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is the closest major commercial airport to downtown San José and many Silicon Valley destinations. It has two passenger terminals, A and B, plus direct access to rental cars, app-based rideshares, airport parking and VTA Route 60 connections. For many South Bay travelers, its compact layout can make SJC simpler than starting or ending a trip at SFO or OAK.

Terminal A vs Terminal B

The terminals form a relatively linear airport complex and are connected within the passenger area. Travelers making a connection should follow airport signs and confirm whether they must reclear security, especially after an international arrival or when traveling on separate tickets.

Which airlines fly from SJC?

SJC hosts domestic and international service, but airline participation and nonstop routes change regularly. Getting to SJC by public transit

VTA Route 60 serves both airport terminals and is the central link between SJC and the region’s larger transit network. Depending on direction and the current schedule, it can connect travelers toward:

• Santa Clara Transit Center for Caltrain, ACE and Amtrak connections;
• Milpitas BART Station for BART service;
• Metro/Airport light-rail station for VTA rail connections toward downtown and other San José destinations; and

Rideshare, taxi and passenger pickup

App-based rideshares may drop departing passengers at the departure curbs for either terminal. Arriving passengers must use designated pickup stops, which differ between Terminal A and Terminal B and can change as airport traffic patterns evolve.

After requesting a ride, compare the app’s instructions with the airport signs and the current official rideshare map. Confirm the terminal and stop number before walking away from baggage claim. Drivers meeting a passenger should use the airport’s current waiting and pickup rules rather than circling terminal roadways.

Rental cars at SJC

The Rental Car Center is across Airport Boulevard from Terminal B. Terminal B passengers can use the marked crosswalks from the baggage-claim area. According to the airport, Terminal A and international-arrival passengers can use an airport shuttle bus to reach the Rental Car Center.

Rental-agency hours vary. Travelers arriving late should confirm counter and after-hours procedures with the specific company. For returns, follow airport signs to the Rental Car Center rather than navigating only to a street address, since the return entrance and assigned company floor matter.

Parking at San José airport

The best Bay Area airport is determined by the entire itinerary, not airport size alone.

• Choose SJC when its schedule works and the trip begins or ends in San José, Santa Clara or the South Bay.
• Consider SFO when it offers a materially better international or nonstop itinerary, or when the destination is closer to San Francisco or the Peninsula.
• Consider OAK for East Bay access or when its fare and schedule produce a better door-to-door trip.

Compare airfare, baggage rules, ground transportation, expected traffic, parking, departure time and the risk of a separate connection. A lower fare at a distant airport may not be cheaper after the full transfer is included.
